The Importance of Reading to Your Children

 In Nurse's Corner

Many people think that learning to read is something that starts in school, but actually learning the basics of reading and language starts early in infancy. We all know that babies cannot read, but listening is how they learn about language and reading books to your children is a very important part of that learning process. I think that this quote from the organization, Reading is Fundamental, states it very well, “Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word.”

Reading aloud helps babies and children learn the following:

  • Promotes bonding between parent and child
  • Learn to talk
  • Learn rhyming, and sentence structure
  • Build knowledge
  • Learn the basic skills of how to use a book
  • Learn to use your imagination (by creating pictures in your mind as you listen)
  • Increasing their vocabulary
  • Use their senses of hearing, sight and touch
  • Develop listening skills
  • Express feelings and emotions
  • Improve concentration
  • Learn to identify objects
  • Develop literacy skills

Reading to your babies and children seems like such a simple thing, but is often overlooked in our busy lives. It is very important to develop a daily routine that includes books.

  • Start in infancy and continue reading aloud to and with your children even after they can read
  • Read every day, any time is fine but many families like before naps and at bedtime
  • Have books easily available for children to play with and look at pictures
  • Change your voice to act out characters in the book to add to the fun of reading
  • Sit with your child during playtime to point out pictures and learn objects
  • It is best to use actual books for younger children and not only books that have been downloaded to electronic devices.

Building a basic foundation for their language, learning, reading and academic success is encouraged by reading to your children every day. You can also include other reading opportunities in your community such as story time at local libraries and book stores.

Check out the following places for less expensive or free books:

  • Local library
  • Used book stores and other second hand stores
  • Yard sales
  • Churches
  • Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, you can register your child online
  • Barnes and Noble summer reading program
  • Google free books for kids

Remember, it is never too early or too late to start reading to your children, it is something simple that you can start today. Open a book and have fun building a foundation of learning with your child.

  • Aprender a hablar
  • Aprender a identificar objetos
  • Desarrollar habilidades literarias
