Getting Started with ABA Therapy at MASC

Starting ABA Therapy Services

Starting ABA therapy can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone. At Mariposa Autism Service Center, we’re here to make the process as smooth and supportive as possible. Here’s what you need to know:

Step 1: Get a Diagnosis

To begin ABA services, most insurance plans (including Medicaid/Turquoise Care) require a formal Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis.

What Counts:

Stage 1 Diagnosis from a:

  • Developmental pediatrician
  • Child psychologist or psychiatrist
  • Trained primary care provider (per NM guidelines)

The diagnosis must clearly state ASD, include a standardized screening tool, and describe how the diagnosis affects your child’s daily life.

Not sure where to start? We can help connect you with a local provider.

Step 2: Verify Your Insurance

Once you have a diagnosis:

  • Check if your insurance covers ABA
  • MASC accepts New Mexico Medicaid and many private insurance plans
  • We’re happy to help verify your benefits — just ask!

Step 3: Contact MASC

You don’t have to figure this out alone. When you reach out, we’ll walk you through:

  • What to expect from ABA services
  • What paperwork is needed
  • How our intake and assessment process work

Llámanos al (575) 652-3155 or contact us through our website — whatever is easiest for you!

Important Note:

There may be a waitlist for ABA services at MASC. We encourage families to begin the process as early as possible, so we can offer support as soon as space becomes available.

Still Have Questions?

Whether you’re unsure about your child’s diagnosis, need help with insurance, or just want to understand how ABA therapy works, we’re here for you every step of the way.

Together, we can help your child grow, learn, and thrive — at home, in school, and in the community.
