Aside from serving as an RBT, I am also an apprentice of Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and currently completing my Master’s Degree to become a BCBA.

My work at MASC is unique. As an RBT, I have the opportunity to provide one-on-one Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy to children and young adults ages 2 to 21 years old who are on the autism spectrum. Using the individualized behavior plans designed by our MASC BCBAs, I help our clients learn communication skills, social and daily living skills, and more. Through my approach, I focus on creating fun, engaging, and naturalistic learning opportunities, helping clients to learn in ways that feel motivating and empowering.

The work we do in partnership with our clients and families ultimately improves the quality of life for the children we serve. When our clients receive services, their families can expect individualized and high-quality treatment based on the child’s strengths, needs, and goals. Additionally, they can also benefit from an increase in functional communication, improved independence in daily living skills, and support in reducing challenging behaviors through empathetic approaches and evidence-based strategies. Families also benefit from guidance and training that can give them tools and techniques to help in their journey supporting and raising a child on the autism spectrum. Whether we provide therapies in our clinic, out in the community, during school hours, or in a home setting, as your RBT I strive to create an overall positive and compassionate atmosphere.

During my time as an RBT, I have witnessed several heartwarming stories worth sharing. From seeing children learn to communicate through different forms like signs and visuals, or even helping them learn how to use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, being a part of their progress is incredibly rewarding. We have also made connections within our clinic with children building friendships with peers who also receive services. Seeing our older clients accomplish everyday skills like shopping, cooking, baking, and self-care really emphasizes the impact these therapies can have in our clients lives.

As a MASC RBT, I am honored to work with a team that focuses on and prioritizes every child’s well-being and values evidence-based practices to help them reach their unique goals. It is truly very rewarding to witness their progress and smiles as they reach milestones, and I look forward to continuing to support families in our community as a future BCBA.

Hi, I am Kenia Portillo, and for the last two and a half years, I have served as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) for the Aprendamos Family of Services Mariposa Autism Service Center.
