Preventing Hot Car Deaths

Did you know that “since 1990, nearly 800 children have died of heatstroke after being left behind in a vehicle” according to an article in Forbes, June 1, 2017.  Of hot car deaths; 20% were from a parent leaving the child in the car while they ran a quick errand, 30% were from children getting in the car without their parent’s knowledge when they were playing and 50% were left in the car accidently by their parent.  The majority of all of these children were under 2 years old.

“I would never do that, I am a responsible parent,” is what most parents think, even the parents who accidently left their children in the hot cars.  So how can this still be happening?  Some possible reasons are; parents are in a hurry, they are out of their daily routing, the baby fell asleep, the parent is distracted by thinking about their day, they are on the phone, or by habit they are on “autopilot”.

We have all gotten in our car after shopping and it is so hot that we quickly roll down windows and start the air conditioner because it is so unbearable, but did you know that the intense heat can cause a heatstroke in just a short amount of time?  If the temperature is just 85-90F outside the temperature inside your car can rise to 130F in just 10-15 minutes.  Heatstroke occurs when the core body temperature is 104F or higher.  Heatstroke can cause major organ failure, brain damage and death.  Immediate emergency medical attention is required.

What can we do to prevent hot car deaths?

  • Look before you lock: open the back door to look in the backseat every time you get out of the car.
  • Keep something you need in the backseat: purse, cell phone, computer bag, or anything essential to your daily routine
  • Never leave your children in the car even when you think it will be “just a minute”
  • Download an App: there are several apps to help prevent hot car deaths, such as; Precious Cargo, Kars4Kids, and Baby on Board, so check the app store on your phone.
  • Travel with a stuffed animal: keep a stuffed animal in the car seat, when you place your child in the car seat, put the stuffed animal in the front passenger seat as a reminder that your baby is in the back seat.
  • Always lock the doors: lock them even when in the driveway or garage to prevent children from getting in the car during play
  • Put all keys and key fobs away out of the reach of children: kids might want to find them and play with them, unlocking and being able to get into the car.
  • Have a plan with your daycare provider: Have a plan that they call you if your child does not show up at their regular time.
  • If you see something, act immediately: If you see a child left alone in a car call 911 immediately and learn CPR.
  • There are several devices on the market, so do some research.
