While early intervention programs are incredible tools to help children thrive and meet their milestones, the in-home environment where services are provided can sometimes feel isolating for families. To help create spaces to help families connect with each other and form networks of support, Aprendamos Early Intervention has launched the EI (Early Intervention) Community Events Program.
EI Community Events are structured classes that support developmental goals like motor skills, social interaction, and parent involvement in a group setting. They’re meant to reinforce Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) goals in a more natural, community-based environment while also giving families opportunities to connect and practice skills outside of traditional sessions. By creating a sense of community, families are able to get to know other parents who have babies and toddlers benefiting from early intervention. “We often meet families in their homes during such an important time in their child’s life, but we also recognize how important it is for parents to feel connected to others who truly understand their journey. These community events create a space where families can come together, share experiences, support one another, and celebrate their children’s growth side by side,” said Aprendamos Early Intervention Director, Margie Apodaca.
So far, the EI Community Events have been a valuable resource for families. The 8-week Tumble Bugs Workshop provides an opportunity for a fun, movement-based class designed to support early motor skills, balance, and coordination through guided play. The Tiny Tuners 6-week music class helps babies and toddlers discover the joy of music, giving them the opportunity to sing, play, and learn together. Other resources like baby yoga and Little Learners programs also provide additional enrichment and resources for families. With weekly activities planned across Doña Ana County, families have the opportunity to experience events in the communities they call home. Early Intervention Community Events Coordinator & Child Development Center Liaison, Jessica Fernandez, shared, “When my child was in a program before, I didn’t have experiences like this, and I often felt alone. Seeing these events now for other families fills me with hope, hope that they’ll have the connection and support I once needed but didn’t have. I’m grateful to work for Aprendamos where we offer that kind of support and experience.”
