The New Mexico FIT Program: Early Intervention for Families

The New Mexico Family Infant Toddler (FIT) Program provides free early intervention services for children from birth to age three who have developmental delays or disabilities. Through FIT, families receive coordinated support from licensed professionals at no cost, helping every child in New Mexico have the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive.

What Is the New Mexico FIT Program?

The Family Infant Toddler (FIT) Program is a statewide early intervention system funded by the New Mexico Department of Health. It was created to ensure that all families, regardless of income or insurance status, can access services that support their child’s early development. FIT works through local community providers like Aprendamos - Intervención Temprana, who deliver developmental evaluations, therapies, and family support in a child’s natural environment such as the home, daycare, or community setting.

What Services Does FIT Offer?

Families enrolled in the New Mexico FIT Program may receive a range of early intervention services based on their child’s needs, including:

  • Developmental evaluations and ongoing assessments
  • Speech, occupational, and physical therapy
  • Family therapy and infant mental health services
  • Specialized instruction and developmental guidance
  • Social work, nutrition, and nursing support
  • Service coordination to help families access community resources

All services are family-centered, meaning caregivers play an active role in goal-setting and daily practice to support progress between visits.

Who Qualifies for the FIT Program?

Children from birth to age three may qualify for free FIT services if they:

  • Show signs of developmental delays in areas like communication, movement, or play
  • Have a diagnosed medical condition that could impact development
  • Are at risk due to biological or environmental factors

Eligibility is determined through a free evaluation conducted by a licensed early intervention team. Families can refer themselves—no doctor’s referral is required.
