A Family’s Ten Year Journey with Aprendamos: Gail’s Story

Gail and her family were first referred to Aprendamos in 2015 when they were given custody of their grandchildren. Soon after, the Aprendamos Early Intervention program became a regular part of their lives. For ten years, they received regular services through the organization, with one of their grandchildren still receiving early intervention services today. “During this time, Aprendamos stepped in and truly made such a meaningful difference for our entire family”, Gail said.

As a caregiver, Gail found the resources provided by their physical, occupational, and speech therapists incredibly helpful. “The therapists helped us understand behaviors, taught us new strategies, and gave us tools through one-on-one support and video classes”, Gail shared. “They didn’t just guide us, they connected with us. The kids looked forward to their sessions and loved every therapist they worked with. Along the way, they learned new skills and gained confidence in handling challenges.”

One particular memory from the last decade stands out for Gail. Back in 2015, Gabe, a former therapist who worked with Gail’s granddaughter, planned a fun, little dance party with her. “Our granddaughter dressed up in formal clothes, and together they put on a show. She was only a child then, but now, at age 12, she still remembers that special moment. It meant so much to her and to us.”

Gail and her family are also grateful that the bonds they built through Aprendamos have lasted over the years. “They’ve carried us through difficult times and reminded us we were never alone. The Aprendamos staff has become part of our family and we are so thankful to the team who helped shape our lives for the better”, Gail said. Living in Truth or Consequences, she is also glad to see our services available so close to home. “We have seen the Aprendamos Early Intervention program grow from serving only Doña Ana County to now also serving Sierra County.”

When we asked Gail what she would share with a parent or caregiver exploring services through Aprendamos, she said, “Whether you are a parent, a grandparent, or both at once, Aprendamos is there with the support and services you need. For us, Aprendamos has been more than just a program, it’s been family.”

Thank you, Gail, for sharing your story and being a part of the Aprendamos journey for the last decade!
