Meet Nancy Wertz, Registered Nurse for the Cariño Family Health Nurse Family Partnership Program!
Originally from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Nancy graduated from the Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. After graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, David, and embarked on a 20-year journey with the Air Force. “I worked in many areas of nursing, including medical-surgical, dialysis, critical care, Telemetry, as a House Nursing Supervisor,” she shared.
Their journey led them to Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1993, and after a brief stint working in the local ER, she was hired at Alamogordo Home Care. Nancy went on to be one of the founding staff members for their hospice program, where she was later promoted to Hospice Patient Care Coordinator and Director of Clinical Services for the agency. She left in 2016 to work as a Care Coordinator for Blue Cross Blue Shield’s New Mexico Centennial Program and remained there until she retired from nursing in 2023.
In January 2026, Nancy joined the Cariño team to help expand the Nurse Family Partnership program into Otero County. As a resident, she has a unique insight into the impact the NFP program can make for expecting mothers and infants in the region. “I truly believe that the NFP program is very much needed in Otero and surrounding counties, and I am excited to see how our nurses are able to impact the care that the mothers, babies, and children receive.” It also means a lot to Nancy to be able to provide this program and improve outcomes in her home community. “I am excited at the prospect of being a part of helping to make those changes and improve the lives of families right here in our county.”
Cristin Weldon, Director of Home Visiting for Cariño Family Health, shared, “For over a decade, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Nancy and witnessing her incredible impact. Her expertise, compassion, and fierce advocacy for families set her apart, and her commitment to her community, both professionally and through her volunteerism, is truly unmatched.”
When she isn’t busy supporting children and families, Nancy can be found giving back to her community. “I love to volunteer! I have been a member of the Rotary Club of White Sands for the past 23 years and serve as the Executive Secretary of the Club and the Rotary Advisor for the Interact Club of Alamogordo High School,” she said. She is a hands-on member of the Club, helping with projects like the monthly food project and ramp project. She also has been volunteering at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta since 1996, and is now the Chief Official of the Landowner Relations Team. Nancy even has her own remote control hot air balloon that she flies as a hobby. “My balloon is named ‘Rayas Azul’ of course, because zebra stripes are my favorite!”
Welcome, Nancy, and thank you for helping families in Otero County create a foundation to help build brighter futures!
